HKFI and PolyU study: private health insurance expenditure up over 60% in four years
The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) released the findings of a study conducted with PolyU CPCE. Analysing more than ten million inpatient and outpatient claim records, the study found that overall private medical insurance expenditure in Hong Kong rose by over 60% between 2019 and 2023. The main driver was not the unit price of medical services but a near-70% rise in inpatient claim frequency, directly linked to an increase in day procedures. The study also found that average inpatient claim amounts were about 40% lower under group plans than under individual plans, and over 40% lower when panel doctors were used.
