CRITICAL ILLNESS

Critical illness plans

One flagship critical illness plan from each of 13 insurers. Parameters and highlights are compiled from each insurer's official product page and product brochure.

Product information on this page is compiled from each insurer's official product page and product brochure (checked 2026-09-30). The button at the foot of every card links straight to that plan on the insurer's official site. Numbers of covered conditions, policy currency, premium term and benefit term are factual product parameters; non-guaranteed benefits (such as dividends and terminal bonuses) are not shown here. Condition definitions, claim requirements, exclusions and the latest arrangements are governed by the insurer's formal policy terms.

KEY POINTS

Four things to focus on

Is the sum assured enough, can it pay out more than once, can early-stage illness be advanced, and can premiums be waived.

Is the sum assured enough

A common rule of thumb is three to five years of income, to cover treatment, recovery and household costs while income is interrupted.

Multiple payout mechanics

Check how many payouts are available, the waiting period between claims, and whether conditions are grouped so that only one claim per group is allowed.

Early-stage advances

Early-stage conditions are usually advanced as a percentage of the sum assured — note whether the main sum assured is reduced as a result.

Premium waiver

On diagnosis of a specified condition, remaining premiums may be waived while cover continues. This matters especially for long premium terms.

FAQ

Common questions

I already have medical insurance — do I still need critical illness cover?
They do different jobs. Medical insurance reimburses actual treatment costs; critical illness cover pays a lump sum on diagnosis, which can replace lost income, fund recovery care and cover household expenses.
Is multiple payout worth the extra premium?
It is worth prioritising if there is family history or a concern about cancer recurrence. On a limited budget, getting the first sum assured high enough is usually more practical than chasing payout counts.
Savings-type or pure protection?
Savings-type critical illness cover includes cash value and dividends, costs more, but grows over the long term. Pure protection costs less, so the same budget buys a higher sum assured.
What health information must I declare?
You must declare past medical history, any abnormal examination results and current medication truthfully. Non-disclosure can lead to a claim being declined or the policy being voided.
